Default Pottery potty- Mess milk jug- Kings Liverpools

My latest acquisition, sold as a milk jug from the officers mess ( which I think may well be right )

The makers mark on the bottom of the item was used ( according to the internet ) from 1936 to 1945 which surprised me because the design of the badge on the jug was replaced in 1926 but then it occurred to me that perhaps the jug was made to replace a broken item in an earlier made set.

I do like things like this that have survived for years against all the odds despite being so fragile.

P.B.

Very nice pick up P.B.

mess china seems harder to find in my experience than the cutlery, which itself can be hard to source. I have a NAAFI jug which is the closest thing I have in my collection to mess china.

That's nice Peter

I have 3 Devon & Dorset Regiment plates or saucers which I assume are from a mess.

Another item that I have is a pottery candlestick, no makers mark but with ( what I think is ) a transfer crest ( not a hand painted crest ) of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Kings Liverpool Regiment.

For some reason I have always thought it was a souvenir rather than an item used by the battalion but on reflection I cannot see any reason why it might not have been used in the Battalions Headquarters.

A Victorian coffee cup from the 56th West Essex Regiment dinner service.
Fine white bone china, with regimental crest, and decorated in "pompadour" purple and gold. The maker is T Broome, Newport, Isle of Wight.

Available for sale on the website: www.militarychest.com

Thank you for looking, Keith

Peter,

in terms of cutlery I think the unit marked knifes are the hardest to find. I have a quite a few spoons and forks, but I have only one of the knifes.

Jerry.

Thanks to a generous Forum member I have an example of a spoon to the Liverpool Irish.

A lot of the Liverpool Scottish spoons you come across were actually shooting prizes, but I think the Liverpool Irish spoon is from one of the battalions Messes.

Peter,

Very nice and I would be happy to see that as a regimental spoon.

Some more of mine.

I also have a part set of 10th Gurkha Rifles forks of 3 different types/sizes.

These turned up at a Surrey car boot sale many years ago. We ought to use them really. According to Cox, the 13th Great Indian Peninsular Railway Battalion was renamed the Great Indian Peninsular Railway Regiment in 1920.

Perhaps not military. Such "generic" items were used by certain Government departments and police forces.

Dave.
