Thankyou all for your info.
I'll pass the j2 over, but interesting to learn about the green beret and it's possible use by the SAS
Regards
Jon

Fascinating photo. What colour beret was he wearing - commando green or maroon beret with RM cap badge?

Default SAS beret badge on green beret

Friends,

A bit late, but in the old SAS museum (Duke of York's) was a commando beret with SAS beret badge. Please find attached the picture.

I assume the beret is now in the new museum in Credenhill.

Cheers,

Johan

Can't tell you, photo was taken in the WOs & Sgts mess, where the penalties for wearing headgear are legend. There certainly wasn't a green beret on the HERRICK medals parade, but I rather suspect he would already have one in his possession. There WAS an American officer wearing ACU uniform on parade who was attached, but he confessed to changing into MTP to blend in with the Paras when in the field. "Wearing a different colour uniform tends to attract fire".

As Comd UK Field Army Lt Gen Sir Michael Wilkes had a unique beret on display in his office - presumably a presentation item his hand over as Director Special Forces. It was made up of the left half of a Commando beret stitched to the right of an SAS beret (or vice versa) each half appropriately badged. Some other Forum member may have seen this when summoned to the great man's office? Mike

Fascinating story about Lt Gen Sir Michael Wilkes
But it does sound like the Tommy Cooper Sketch ...

2 Para had an 82nd officer attached to them when I was last down there, but he wore Multicam, which may be the alternate uniform he wore. It may have been the same person.

US multi-cam is very similar to British MTP and the updated 'Scorpion' OCU variant of multi-cam is now standard US issue for operational use. The older grey ACU camouflage uniform is now reserved for barrack use only. There is always at least one US exchange officer serving with 16 Bde and one Brit with the 82nd Abn Div.

Another example of a para badge on a green beret:
