Default HMNZ TRANSPORT

Hi all

Thought I'd post this one I just picked up. Thought it was an interesting one. From what I found on the web it is the organization that transported the ANZAC's over to Europe and the Middle east in the Great War.

Has anyone else seen these or has one.

Regards

Simon

Hi Simon,
Yes, an interesting badge, also made in gilt and enamel, worn by personnel on the troop ships during WW1.
Cheers, Tinto

Cheers Tinto, much appreciated. Not a badge I have seen before, so glad I got it.

Regards

Simon.

Clearly styled after the 1914 Admiralty badge. Also seen with blue enamel in the outer ring. Maker is Cecil Montagu BAY from Wellington.
Blue enamel said to be for officers but no proof of this other than the fact that the enameled version is rarer.

Exclamation Update

Updated with additional information in case of future searches.

From 'The National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy' website :

"At the start of World War One the New Zealand Government chartered a number of merchant ships and converted them for troop carrying.

The ships were manned by their civilian officers and ratings, the distinction given to them was a button-hole badge which declared that they were serving on New Zealand Transports."

Hi

Maker on this is Cecil Montagu Bay of Wellington. A highly skilled engraver and die sinker.

He made a gold Returned Soldier's Association badge to present to the Prince of Wales on his tour "Downunder" in 1920.

This was put into a greenstone, gold and silver casket lined with purple (I think) silk. The story was that everyone in the workshop made some small contribution to the making of the casket.

I have a black and white picture of the finished product but where is the real thing?
