I was somewhat surprised to see this one. It is a match for the one above with the same 2 part construction and 'square' WELSH lettering. I was not the buyer and I was glad about that.

There was an identical one on ebay for £8 recently. Having read Andy's comment I passed it up but will continue to look for a one piece badge.

Alan,
the same 2 piece WELSH is being sold by a Southern dealer for £20.. Maintain your quest for a 1 piece!!

Andy

Andy,

The question is whether to remove the blacking or not?

Alan,
I wouldn't remove it. I have a blackened Glam yeo for the same period and have read that units in Egypt and Mesopotamia were blackening their badges.
I also have what appears to be a professionally blackened Mons badge, period unknown.
I believe your Lambourne example to be three piece construction under the applied finish as I think I can see an overlay to the title scroll. This would fit with the Lambounre examples I have and with others I've seen.
Regards,
Kevin

Alan,
unless you particularly want to remove the blackening I would agree with Kevin. It's either been done by the original wearer for whatever reason or at a later date to make it appear to be something it is not?

Here's the blackened Glam Yeo I was referring to. Somewhat unusually this one has the PoW motto clearly visible, whereas the scrolls should be blank.

Alan,
I've seen the badge coming up for auction & I wouldn't go for it. This type are only comparable with the later known copies.
They bear no comparison with the standard font of the time.

Another 'square lettered' 2 part badge but this time from Hugh king's collection. Perhaps it's time to review this design's validity?

This one appears to be genuine.... for WW1? Is this one also found in a blackened finish?

For what it is worth, your badge Griff, is the taken from the same die as the one shown by Wardog. Only difference is yours has no scroll. Has it been removed?

If the small O with no underscore is an accepted mark then alls good Certainly looks like the same from the front ....less a bit of detail from the blackening.
