Default Jersey Militia Button Date?

Hi Gents,

I'm just uploading this 3rd Jersey Militia button to my album. My notes say the date would be between 1859 - 1881 as it's rimmed and 25mm (tunic).

Would that be correct or can this date be narrowed a little?

Cheerio,

Roy

Hello Roy

One of my references (an article in Button Lines on Jersey Militia Buttons) gives a date of 1858 to 1868 for this pattern button. The article states that in 1868 the 'Royal Crest' pattern button was adopted as the universal pattern button by officers of the Royal Jersey Militia.

However, this cannot be totally accurate as your button bears a "Firmin & Sons Ld" backmark and as they became a limited company in 1876 your particular button must date after this.

I am not that well up on Jersey Militia buttons so hopefully someone with more knowledge will put us both on the right path!

Roger

Hi Roger,

Thank you for your input. It all makes sense to me.

I only have one other example, much early than this one, so pleased to now add another example to the collection.

Cheers,

Roy
