The other components of the chain look like skulls on top of a maple leaf.
Could it be masonic? |

Btns Andy
Thank you for your comments not found a candidate yet will keep plugging away. I agree Andy done very tastefully. I do believe I have seen similar in the past Sword hilts as Candle sconces are more commonly seen. Btns good spot on the Collar design and the medal I had not seen that,l found some similar but not a Match yet on the net. I I will update if I find nationality. Regards to all Stephen |

Just had a email from a pall who says that they are Classic bearskin plate shape and wonders if the plume holders have been added to balance the item out.
When taking a close look at the back this looks like a probable adaptation. Regards Stephen |

Shako plate Origins found
After following Btns idea I first found the award and found it i s
The Royal Order of the Seraphim (Swedish: Kungliga Serafimerorden; Seraphim being a category of Angels) is a Swedish order of chivalry created by King Frederick I on 23 February 1748, together with the Order of the Sword and the Order of the Polar Star. The order has only one class with the dignity of Knight (Member for women and Member of the Cloth for clergymen), and is the foremost order of Sweden Which narrows down the search parameters, I then found a almost identical Shako plate on line just the central device being different having the three Swedish crowns o the centre. It would appear to have been worn from 1860's until the turn of the century. Thank you all for your input in solving this quest.however I am having difficulties uploading images I found on line frustratingly. Regards to all Stephen |

I fairly recently got a look at a late nineteenth century catalogue from an American maker of 'regalia', including badges and other insignia for bands, fraternal orders, town organizations and so on. There were a truly astonishing number of such groups in the period 1860-1920! And, inevtiably, some of the regalia survives - old Masonic stuff is quite common - to confuse we poor collectors.

Whilst your shako plates are undoubtedly original, someone out there is obviously messing around with similar plates. I bought this one as a curiosity as it has clearly been embellished. Someone has added a KOYLI cap badge in place of the star, added a Victorian crown in the place of the Swedish crown and added the Gibraltar castle in place of the Swedish arms device. They have also removed the lions.
All the additional pieces have been lead soldered on either as a film prop or more probably as a badge for the "steam Punk" brigade. |
