Default Shoulder title loops?

Could someone please explain to me why there are two different types of loop to the rear of metal shoulder titles?

I was wondering if one type was earler than the other?

Many thanks,
Andy

Smile Loops

I think the really early titles which would be pre 1900 were almost all the round loop variety, the "spade" loops were generally found on titles worn around WWI and after.
