Philip,

The pictures below are from the programme for a parade which ( if it is the same parade ) commemorated the closure of Headquarters Western Command on 31st July 1972.

I hope the list of Marching Troops is legible, but no mention of SAS

Peter

(Nice to see the Band, Pipes and Drums of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers )

hi peter,

the closeing of western command in 1972 seems likely.

this must be possibly last time the sas (regular or ta) made a openly public apperance at military parade to my knowledge

In 1979 I was a young man we had a trip out to an army open day there were SAS soldiers doing a static display with pink panthers and captured weapons brought back from Ireland
( always remember a German mg 34 machine gun they had )
this had been stripped out of a shot down plane it was the type with no butt and the big pivit mount bars sticking out of either side .

They had various displays ongoing including an abseil wall and a survival stand complete with improvised shelters fire and teaching how to skin rabbits for the public !

I think back now and am certain they were regular SAS and it seams amazing but I dont think security was as keen back then
