Default 17th Lancers Arm motto

Interesting picture of a plaque that commemorates Balaclava in as that it shows what some consider the first Arm motto I know artistic licence plays a roll with artists none the less interesting.

Smile 17th Lancers Arm motto

Mac,

I think you have answered a question for me, I have a large 17th Lancers badge, same design as the cap badge but larger. It originally had three loops, E-W-N, but the top one has broken off, an old badge which came with an old collection.

I have put pics of a normal "Chad" and my large badge on the board with normal sized cap badges.

Regards Rob

Default Arm motto

Morning Rob
Thanks for posting pictures always interesting to see other collections. The Motto as we former 17th/21st Lancers call it.....never call it a cap badge to a Lancer we will always correct that statement force of habit I am afraid drilled into us at a very early age.
The picture I put up seems to show the more oblique Arm Motto that some historians think was first worn from the 1825 plate or its thought may be from the 1846 which is far closer to the 17th/21st Motto.
I think your fine example may well be a pouch ornament. There are Pictures of RSM Clark wearing a much bigger Arm motto taken from a officers 1846 paten plate.
The Arm motto as it was went through quiet a few changes ending up during WWII with the nick name Chadd after the cartoon character.
the pics I have added are a 1846 Patten plate that shows the more recognisable Motto and the style Clark wears in the pictures . The model shows the 1825 type and the Arm motto is the white metal hollow backed variant that seemed to change around 1906 to a more rounder version.

Best Mac

Default Motto

Mac,

I must first apologise for using the term "cap badge", force of habit I'm afraid, yes, I can see the similarity between the motto on the front of the plate and mine.

You think my large motto could be a pouch adornment, quite possibly, many thanks.

Rob
