James Layton RALSTON finished the war in command of the 85th Battalion. After the war, Ralston was promoted to Colonel before embarking on a political career. He was (among other cabinet positions in the Canadian government) the Minister of National Defence from 1926 to 1930 and again during WW2 from 1940 to 1944. He continued his connection with the 85th Bn as the HCol (1927-1942) of the Cape Breton Highlanders which perpetuated the 85th Bn.

During his time as CO, LCol Ralston was wounded; his younger brother, Ivan, was the second-in-command and temporarily assumed command after his evacuation. Ivan was killed two days later leading the battalion in an attack.

Certainly not 29th Battalion CEF. I would say 45th Victoria Regiment.

Don't get creative.

I have always appreciated creativity, almost as much as politeness. Keep up the excellent work Voltigeur.
