Question AA BADGE Royal Engineers

Another badge brought at Aldershot today. Royal Engineers with brass slider and maker mark of JR GAUNT B'HAM On the rear of the badge on the lower part of the silver wreath it is marked JR GAUNT LONDON.
Can anyone explain why this is??
Regards Jerry

Slider was manufactured in one place, badge in the other.Left over stock of one part when the factories merged.
Besides the oddity,a brass slidered badge is a good find.I think the Gaunt brass sliders make a stronger badge fixing than the Grove type of brass slider fitting.

Thanks for your reply Mike H, Another variation to add to my small but growing collection of RE a/a badges. Jerry.

These do turn up now and again and Mike is probably right on the reason but I would like some documentation to the fact to be absolutely sure.

Chris

Default JR GAUNT

I have noticed that makers like GAUNT have different markings on the back of badges. So far for GAUNT I have seen/have:-
JR GAUNT LONDON
JR GAUNT B'HAM
JR GAUNT LONDON Ltd
Would it be useful to list these badges by mark?

Hi Jerry,

This would be quite a task to reconcile badges with marks as there are more than a few of them. So far I have identified five Gaunt marks on sliders and three cast body marks. For other companies such as Firmin the number of marks is even higher and there are 14 odd identified companies that used a mark that I know of.

I don't have time to do this now as I'm back in work and also the full-bore target shooting season is well underway which is my primary hobby and usually takes up more time than writing about these A/A badges.

But if someone wants to do it please feel free - it may well unearth a few 'inconsistencies' which of course, may infuriate a few people...

Regards

Chris
