Default Canada tank collar

Hi, bit of a Canadian day yesterday at local fair. Managed to get this badge, not a Gaunt badge, does any one know who the maker would be. There appears to be a maker's mark, a Greek head, thanks in advance, Mike

Hello Mike, the image of the mm is a bit blurry, but it looks like the Scully maker mark. (Greek helmeted figure).

Now I am not so sure. Scully mark is more like the Greeks used on the Artist's Rifles badges.

Not convinced it is actually a collar badge, me thinks it's a sterling sweetheart which has been lugged for some reason!?
I have two sterling marked sweethearts with this stamping to the back both flat backed, with original brooch pin. 71 and 168 battalon, as Caron made the cap badges I'm thinking Caron my have made these also.
All best Dan

Dan, that pattern of badge was not authorized until 1940, when the Canadian Armoured Corps badges were approved. I have a pair, somewhere, that are similar flat back, opposite sides, attributed to officer's.

A curious collar. (and it is a collar badge). I have a few facing pairs in this pattern, white metal and silver plate, lugged and pinback. However, all of mine are fully struck on the back, not solid as in this example?

I think the mark on the back is a 'national' mark. A government hallmark which is a C with a lion's head in the middle.

"THE NATIONAL MARK
In 1934 the Government of Canada instituted a national mark for items made of precious metal that are wholly manufactured in Canada. The mark was a lion’s head inside a letter C. (It was changed to a maple leaf inside a letter C in 1978.)"

Interesting information about the national mark. Perhaps the small device under the C would indicate the particular maker. Of note on the linked page, they indicate that Ryrie Bros were take over by Birks in 1914 and switched their marks. There are a few CEF badges with Ryrie marks.

Dan, I was thinking about the sweetheart Tank pins. They could have been copied from the British Tank Corps, which used the First WW type tank on their badge.

Hi, having looked at the maker's mark from all directions, I think it is a Rodin mark, not well struck at the base. It looks more like a deformed figure 4 as it is, hope this helps Mike
