Malcolm,

I thought it looked OK.

I bow to your superior knowledge on Cav/Yeo badges but please could you expand on why it s a fake.

The badge shown has loops and is die-struck with a bronze finish, according to K&K 1461 this pattern was worn in bronze, white metal and brass presumably by other ranks and is not an officers badge as is the one Malcolm showed which has blades.

If this is a fake then I think they have managed to make a good one.

Always happy to learn. Mick

Default Bronze Yeomanry

Mick, I am no expert on Yeomanry badges, but off the top of my head I can think of:-
Warwickshire, Denbighshire and East Kent Yeomanry.

Possibly one of the worse books on badges ever ,but in "Cavalry and Yeomanry Badges of the British Army 1914 " this badge is described as :

169, bz:r.

Standing for bronze and rings ( or lugs as most collectors call them), the badge being in the section for other ranks badges. There are a number of officers badges in a separate section with the note " Officers badges ,unless otherwise stated are fitted with tabs"

How much weight you give to the information in the book is up to the individual.

P.B.

Simon I may have not been clear when I said fake the badge was described as an Officers and was being sold as one that was what I was referring to .
Yeomanry did have bronzed badges for other ranks.
I have to admit I have not come across a bronzed Oxford Hussars.
All the best

Having had a look through my files apart from the previously mentioned bronzed Yeomanry badges I have Dorset Yeo, Bucks Hussars, Derbyshire Yeo and Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars.

The genuine ORs badges of which there are a few patterns, have wider scroll tips, with a slight flourish midpoint. There is a bronzed ORs pattern however it does not feature the Regimental pattern (Adelaide) crown and has a standard King's/Imperial crown. Sadly this member dealer, with a great reputation has possibly slipped up here!

I am also confused.

You have stated you are a 93 year old widow lady whose husband used to collect badges.

How therefore can you provide intimate details of badges such as this.

Were you by any chance lying through your teeth when you stated your age, sex and status openly on this Forum or is it the case you are someone who is hiding behind a false identity?

Please explain yourself.

According to a government tender of April 1916 the Oxfordshire Yeomanry Pattern 555/1915 (ie after the WO took over the procurement and provision of TF / Yeo badges from the County associations) was in 'GS' (aka WM) and with a 'vertical shank (aka slider).
4,000 were ordered.

I just scrolled down that WO tender for examples of bronzed yeomanry badges - all are either 1915 or 1916 Patterns

Buckinghamshire
Derbyshire
Dorset
N Devonshire
Nottinghamshire
Warwickshire
Welsh Horse
Yorkshire Dragoons

If the badge in question is a "common copy" I'm surprised that more of them are not around. Malcolm is a very well respected and knowledgeable specialist in the way of Yeomanry and Cavalry and if he's not seen one they must be fairly scarce.

I bought mine which incidently cost 12/6 from one G.N. Farrier who was the curator of the Northumberland Fusiliers museum, this was a lot of money in the mid sixties when I was an apprentice on £5.00 per week, but as a scarce item the badge was priced accordingly.
