Impossible i.d.
Here's one for the Forum's forensic team. (Scan is included purely as an indication of the state of artefact and by no means intended to be deciphered!)
Just dug. A copper alloy disc in fragmentary condition. However, I have deducted that it COULD be a larger than life button face and that it is white metal, design resembles Police pattern buttons (title in annulus), but is 29mm. The only lettering I have deciphered is the word 'KING' (see line drawing). I toyed with King's Lynn Police but seem to have drawn a blank. Would anyone have any idea at all? GTB |

Looks like a lion rampantt facing to viewers left to me - or does the "KINGS" suggest a horse?

Thanks for trying to decipher. Afraid there is nothing to be made out of the centre image. As mentioned in the caption, the scan is an impossible image - blurred, fragmented, degraded and not intended to strain anyone's eyes by attempting a go at it. The line drawing is the only evidence to go by, I'm afraid.
I've attempted further cleaning but if I continue, the whole thing may fall apart. It's tantalising though as there are indications of further lettering around the annulus, as well as some design in the centre. I will post a clearer photo image - only problem is uploading takes forever. GTB |

29mm is a bit big to be a Military button?

I would suggest KENT instead of KINGS, so maybe Kent Constabulary.

I know. I'm wondering what else it could be though. Perhaps the side of a whistle, possibly Railway associated?
I'm also toying with the word 'KINGSTON' GTB |

WOW! This is going to be a concerted effort to attempt finding the solution. Thanks for all interest.
Facts so far: Size: 29mm (this may preclude item being a button) Die-struck White metal Definitely a facing side or cover; i.e. item was 2-piece Rimmed; an annulus around an inner circle (similar to later design Police buttons) Letters 'KING............star' on annulus Photo to be posted when it uploads!! I am now revisiting item from a totally different angle. I have discarded the button theory and am now concentrating upon item being actually from a broken badge, possibly shaped smilar to other roundel badges, eg. Royal Military Academy. To further stir the pot, if legend is 'KING'S OWN' a local contender might be the King's Own Band Club'!
Open to any other suggestions with a broken badge in mind. GTB |
