Default WW2 Green Beret???

Hi Guy's,

What is going on here?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/322553667599?ul_noapp=true

From the pictures it looks like the band is the fibre type (1970's) and not leather, or am I wrong

Regards
Irv

The Inns of Court green beret was only worn by officers so it's quite possible that when buying it from his hatter the owner asked for a cloth band rather than a leather one.

I have recorded two similar Inns of Court green berets, one in 2006 both of which have the same cloth band. I have also noted khaki berets for the Royal Horse Artillery and Rifle Brigade both with officers' badges and cloth bands.

Some WWII period officers private purchase berets have a ribbed cloth band which can appear similar to 1970's berets. As regards the para beret, the makers mark is correct for pre 1953 Herbert Johnson made hats.

And the C. 1970's berets do not have grommets, or at least the one I have does not.

What does the rectangular stitching in the lining signify? It looks to me as if labels have been removed.

Two different styles of the number 4 in the date on this one.

It is possible, but many berets had a double line of stitching with the dome as part of the construction to reinforce that area IMO.

And a nice black unfaded rectangle below the date on this one.

It is an odd item, but apart from the double 4 it does appear to be a good Kangol made item, but the difference in value between 45 or before compared to 46 to 49 is probably enough to make it worth fudging by an unscrupulous seller, though I am not implying that the current seller has done this or even if it has been done at all. Certainly the odd date would concern me.

This one has clearly been messed with by removal of its original label. Wartime Kangol berets are made to a set pattern with consistent makers marks etc. and all have the double line of stitching in the crown, which is seen even on their newer products.

On wartime Kangol products the makers name is on one line, some time post war they go over to it being on two lines.

The beret has had the last number changed, defiantly. The only factory label that Kangol had was a small white label sewn into the lining.

There are two types of square stitching on the lining. With Kangol having two quite similar in size (see photo) and Supak having the inner square smaller.
