Default Stafford

I was gifted the attached Stafford insignia in 1997/8 courtesy of an acquaintance who had access to the Regiment (if that makes sense).

I am reappraising my collectables but cannot find the notes I made at the time concerning this acquisition. My query concerns the different collar pairs. One set has Holland cloth backing and is smaller than the other set. Can I be enlightened please about the significance of this? Has it to do with amalgamation or rank?

Thanks
GTB

The Holland cloth should be there, but it does come separately. A friend of mine has a piece in a bag which you were apparently issued or given to make the backings.
Remember, the badge from the OR`s waist belt plate is also a collar badge but that had a black backing to it .

The badges are precisely as they came to me, from the Staffords stores.
I am still waiting for identification of the 2 types of collar badges. Churchill hasn't been helpful, may I add.

The two pairs shown are just manufacturers or die variants . Do you mean the original Staffords collar that was replaced around 1970 ? The top pair shown in the image ?
There is a produced sheet that explains why the collar badge design was changed . I know of at least one forum member that has a copy.
Note, the backing to the cap badge came glued in place. Whereas the backings to the collars have been added on and are loose behind the badges.

If the backing is glued to original cap badges, does that mean cap badges without backing are fakes?

Rgds, Thomas.

Naa... as they were not made to deceive.

Unfinished perhaps?

Thanks for reply Mike, however I see a bit of confusion.

I am actually referring to the two different collar pairs in my scan. I doubt they are merely manufacturers variations as they were placed in the package to make up a representative set of insignia. One pair comes with synthetic 'Holland' backings, the other doesn't. And the pair with backings is of a smaller size than the other. All backings have been stuck to the backs of the badges. The larger collars (w/o backing) are stamped 'L. B & B'.

The cap badge has what appears as basket-weave canvas backing, and the shoulder titles have a black felt backing.

Ill stick by what i said .,manufacturers variants nothimg more.Have a word with Bess ,i know he has a few variants of Staffords collars. Some sealed in the bag.As well as the piece of Holland Cloth in the bag .
Some years ago,the guy who sold surplus in Stafford had a box full of JR Gaunt Bham badges, all with the backing glued on.
