Default Opinions wanted on LRDG Badge

I would be grateful for opinions on this LRDG Badge. I attach some pics.
Thanks,
Peter

In my opinion this is a fine original LRDG badge.

It appears to be the badge sold in auction at Thomas Del Mar this week.

Enjoy the hobby, Keith

I believe its a cast copy, i can see pitting ( characteristics of casting ) on the badge. I'm happy to be wrong though.

Keith, do you know what that badge sold for?
Cheers,
Luke

All the traits of a good one in my opinion. But always best to see it is the flesh to make a decision.

I think that is okay, not something that I collect, but, it does not look remotely like any fake that I have come across in the past and you see a great many these days, was it terribly expensive?

Thanks grenadierguardsman, Kieth, Luke, Jack, Mike and Frank,
It looked a bit 'New' to me, but I must confess that I have never seen one in the hand, and I wondered whether it was original or not. It did go for a tidy sum, but then I do not know how much these go for. I thought a bit more.
I just wanted to know what a real one looked like. I must confess that I have seen an 'iffy' item , a U Boat Badge in particular, achieve surprising amounts in very experienced military auctioneers such as Walllis and Wallis,
Thanks,
Peter

Thanks Keith.

Peter - I’m no expert but from reading many posts in this section I gather the ‘going rate’ for a genuine LRDG badge is about the £800 mark. The last one at Bosley’s had a hammer price of £700. So even with TDM’s 28.8% auction costs I’d say you did rather well indeed.

Cheers,
Luke

A lot of money, but, these days, even with the excessive premium, a satisfactory price to actually have to pay out.

Smile LRDG cap badge

I'm no expert on these, but I'm sure all were made in Egypt and were cast, this particular badge shown has had the loops pinched which is generally the sign of a badge from an old collection that had holes drilled in a wooden board and the pinched loops pushed into the wood.

Not a practice recommended and maybe this was why the badge was sold for a reasonable price. A nice find for the buyer . . !

Yes Rob, i too believe they were made cast. My reason for not liking this one was, i believe i can see sharp edging/markings. Which i thought were very new like.

I think you did quite well there, long gone are the days when two hundred and fifty pounds got an original.
