Guards greatcoat or Royal marines rank badges?
Hello,
Just re-arranging a few badges and it struck me that I wasnt quite sure about these three red on black/Dk.Navy ones. The RM wear these colours but also the Brigade of Guards on greatcoats. Can anyone positively ID them. I have to add that having collected hundreds of Kings Crown rank badges this colour combo is very hard to find. regards

Hello Simon,
It’s difficult to tell from photographs, but I’m 80% sure these are RM and not Guards for two main reasons - 1. They don’t look big enough (a Guards WO1 wears a huge coat of arms for example). 2. The shade of red is wrong for Guards, being too much of a ‘vivid red’. The guards badges are a more ‘washed out’ shade of red. Sean

The RSM large badge is not worn on the greatcoat and the red colour is enhanced by the flash photography. Appreciate your views. regards

Tim,
Thanks for that. The RSM badge certainly looks identical, but not the RQMS, or the large Crown as mine have red cushions to the crown, not at all like the RM versions. Does anyone have any Guards Greatcoat badges to compare? regards

Thanks Sean,
That must be a fairly recent feature of the Garrison Sgt. Major. I am still confident that an RSM doesnt and hasnt ever worn one. Great badge though. regards

Not a great Picture https://goo.gl/images/Uji8hH Vern Stokes Shadowing Billy Mott. Vern (as a WO2 not GSM) wore a large Guards Brigade size WO1 Badge on his greatcoat.

Can I just stress that these badges I am asking about relate to the Kings Crown period of dress and I am aware things may be different now.

I have the KC Scarlet on Blue Royal Arms badge for Guards Athol Grey Great Coat; sealed pre 1926, last manufactured in 1954, declared obsolete in January 1959.
Your badge does match the one shown here, scroll down a little; https://rmhistorical.com/files/content/NCO%20WOI.pdf New badge for GSM London District authorised in March 2011. Marc
