Default Montgomeryshire Volunteer Legion button

My latest find from the Ludlow Antiques Market. This relic condition button was found in a box of buttons this morning. I bought it because I was intrigued by the letters M V L beneath the dragon.

A spot of googling has revealed that the letters may indicate the Montgomeryshire Volunteer Legion. This unit was raised by Charles Watkin Willams Wynn in 1803 and transferred to the local Militia in 1809.

Great find.
This was a unit of both cavalry & infantry, disbanded in Sept 1808.
The officers pattern carried the motto "Anorchfygol" (Unconquerable).
Da iawn ti.
Hwyl,
Kevin

Kevin,

thank you for the update, I can find very little on the internet regarding the M.V.L. Could you please give me an idea of how big a unit the Legion was, i.e. how many officers and men at its height?

Thank you,

Simon

Simon,

According to Owen in 1803 established strengths were as follows;-

Cavalry - 12 Officers, 120 other ranks.

Infantry - 67 Officers, 1560 other ranks

Hwyl,

Kevin
