1st NZEF wearing unknown British ? badge

Can you please help me identify this badge ,as worn by a WW1 era New Zealand soldier .His jacket has British army buttons so I assume it is a British badge (nothing in the New Zealand reference books I've ever seen)

Hello Iain,
That's an interesting picture, and a bit of a puzzle.
The "collar badges" look like sweetheart brooches/badges of late Victorian era, perhaps for the Boer War?

Hi John ,Craig Hooper has suggested the soldier is wearing sweetheart badges as collars .A bit unusual but anything goes in the studio .A laurel frame with a smaller NZ Onward in centre
