21st Army Group Unknown sign
At the end of the war 21st Army Group published a pamphlet recording the signs used by RASC companies on their vehicles.
The cover of this booklet illustrated most of the signs carried by the formations of 21AG on both vehicles and uniforms. There is one sign shown on the extract which I have failed to recognise which appears to be a recumbent lion. Its position with other armoured brigade signs suggests a possible armoured connection Can anyone suggest what this might be? Jon |

Hi Jon
Could it be a sphinx, so 56th Independent Infantry Brigade perhaps? Rob |

That thought had occurred to me but it's a rubbish representation if it is!

Interesting ... not an area I know about but it raises the question - How consistent would you judge the quality of the other representations?

Yes, my first impression was that it's supposed to be a sphinx.......

Lion?
There is a certain amount of artistic license with some of these formation signs shown, Leigh has the same impression as I have that it looks more like a sphinx than a lion.

Jon,
Have been off line (n Northern Italy) for a couple of weeks - I'll look into the matter later today! Mike |

I'm ashamed to say that I have had the same booklet for over 20 years and have never noticed the lion-like beast at bottom right (although I did notice that the red/yellow colours of the 34 Armd Bde sign are reversed). Just shows how unobservant I can be! In general the quality of the images on the booklet cover are very inferior to those produced at about the same time on the well known 21 Army Groups formation signs poster. For example the Beach Groups sign has lost its blue backing and the 43 Inf Div sign looks like it was copied from a truck mudguard rather than a battledress sleeve. I regret I have no idea what the lion-like creature may be. Mike
