Wilkinson 1845 Infantry Pattern Sword for Identification possibly 28th B.N.I.
Evening everyone.
I hope that you are all safe and well? I was hoping that I could pick your collective brains on this sword and in particular it's etching...I believe it to be the 28th Bengal Native Infantry as Delhi was one of their Battle Honours and a few of the officers who weren't executed during the Mutiny took part in Greathed's column which fought at Agra and Allyghur. But of course I could be completely wrong! The sword is a pre serial number Wilkinson therefore it dates to between 1845 and 1854. Unfotunately I do not have the sword to hand thus unsure if there are any other markings. Thanks for your input, here are the photos: |

Hello
Not sure if it's much help but one button design used by the 28th Regiment Bengal Native Infantry before the regiment mutinied in 1857 included the battle honours Allyghur, Delhi and Agra (according to Lt Col Poulsom's books on Indian Army Buttons). I would think there is every chance that you are right regarding the badge on the sword. Roger |

Thank you Roger, that is a great help!
I had only been able to look at the Indian Army Lists, which only showed Delhi as a 'Battle Honour' so to be able to confirm that pre-Mutiny, Allyghur and Agra were 'Battle Honours' is great news. I believe that confirms that the sword is 28th B.N.I. as suspected. Unfortunately, unless I find some markings that have gone unnoticed, we will probably never know the owner. |

Yes, strangely Lt Col Poulsom lists the Battle Honours for the 28th Bengal Regiment as "Delhi, Arracan (Light Company)" but the three Battle Honours mentioned are shown as being on the buttons!
A later button (immediately pre-Mutiny) just has the Honour "Delhi"! Perhaps the other two were used unofficially. A very nice sword. I hope it is yours! Roger |

Thank you, I also asked Ashok Nath and he confirmed that Allyghur and Agra were used by the 28th.
Now I am even more confused than before! P.S. Does anyone have a photo of the badge in Poulsom's book? |
