Default Naval Division, 63rd Div ?.. took a chance

These were listed on ebay here in the U.S. last week. The photos were poor and the description not much better. The seller was not a military dealer but an advertising tin person.

They were mixed in with other insignia and rank pips inside of a tobacco tin. From the photos they looked Ok, so I took a chance, I was the only bid and they did not go for much. Which did not help to alay my doubts

So with all that said here they are. I think they are period pieces. However not having ever seen an example of this sign in the flesh I can not know for sure. The examples I have found in researching were mounted on a triangular piece of OD material and not round. Going by the construction of the sign I feel somewhat better. Would like to hear other opinions. Many thanks in advance

These are identical to the one I have in my collection. Mine too came from an auction and were not recognised as WW1. I also have a picture of a Gunner in the RND wearing this patch which is on a square piece of khaki material. I have not seen the version on a triangle. I'll post mine when I get a minute.

All the best Mark

Thanks Mark, feel a bit better on these now. The listing and photos was poor and was taking a chance.
Best

Jon, very good. The construction of the patch looks almost identical to the round version other than shape.

thanks

Jack,

Just noticed that my colours are reversed ie red border and anchor but otherwise construction is the same. Also attached a period photo of a 63rd Div patch worn by a Gunner RHA. Its not very clear but you can make out the patch.

All the best Mark

Jack

I've just been going through John Rawlinson's Personal Distinctions book and both round versions are pictured in Chapter 6 of his book. The version that you have (Black outline with red background) was the standard version worn by the RND. The other version with reversed colours (Red outline on black background) was worn by the Royal Marines Medical Unit. The RMMU served in the RND from Gallipoli until the armistice.

Paddy,

Excellent info this patch came via auction with items to a Royal Marine medic!! So the colours make sense.

many thanks

Jack,
Very nice, be interested to see what other odds they came with.
Good, rare genuine examples

John, thanks for the positive comments. this is what came with it in the tin shown. The vendor was a person selling old tobacco, coffee tins and advertising. I assume this is how he found it. In his description he talked more about the tin than the contents.

how tantalizing...
the two naval war service chevrons are nice and make sense, no way to prove this of course but the contents could all be related to the same man.

agreed, on first glance it all looked a bit too tidy to me. As mentioned earlier I zeroed in on the patches and the rest was just background but made some sense.
