WW2 RMD patch, Fake?
Hi Guy's,
I have a question to ask about the 'Royal Marine Division' patch? I have a WW2 RN/RM money belt which has a Combined Operations patch and Royal Marine Division patch sawn on. A totally genuine item. Looking at the RMD patch (Yellow trident on red shield) the stitching is going from side to side horizontally. All the (mint) but being sold as genuine RMD patches (that I can find) have the stitching running diagonally?? Were there two variations or are the diagonally stitched patches 'Fake'?? Regards Irv IWM reference patch...... http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/30071854 And then you see these for sale.... http://www.airforcecollectables.com/...-0RMDIV-01.htm |

Irv,
I don't know, but this example which was donated with several other excellent formation signs in 1986 has excellent provenance. I have other examples which have a somewhat cruder trident. Mike 116 (RM) Inf Bde_KR and SKay.01.jpg |

Cheers Mike
I would like to see one on an original uniform with provenance. All the diagonal stitch patches that I have seen have never been attached to a uniform Regards Irv |

Also note the leadout of the gold/yellow thread at the bottom of the trident, very different on the diagonal stitched patched.

Seated Officer
Mike, in the picture of the seated officer what is below the strident? Is it a B division patch? I f it is I thought they were sewn onto a khaki rectangle then onto the uniform.
It also looks a bit big for a division patch Ray |

It's a large felt B, but I don't know its significance. B Battalion perhaps? Mike

I'm wondering if the 'B' is in fact an '8' which could signify 8th Battalion RM, raised April 1941 ... later went on to become 41 Cdo. RM ??

Decades ago the late John Bailey, a former WW2 Royal, listed numerous WW2 RM cloth flashes in the Formation Sign. In FS 84 dated October 1971, he lists at 12(d) - worn below the title ROYAL MARINES - a red cloth B (seen in 1941). Neither this flash nor any of the other six RM cloth flashes he recorded in FS 84 were identified. Perhaps in the last 46 years they have been? Mike

The B in the photo shows he is serving with the RM Beach Battalion, a component of the RM Division.
Initially formed in July 1941 as the Beach Engineer Battalion, Royal Marines, on 2rd February 1942 it was renamed the Beach Battalion, Royal Marine Division. The trident badge was later worn by 117 Infantry Brigade, formed from Marines. The attached image shows the version on a contemporary combination. Jon |
