Default wild geese badges

Some years ago I purchased a wild geese/ 5 Commando cloth title. I'm not sure if this was worn by Mike Hoare's Commando so if anyone has any pics of a mercenary wearing the badge it would be very interesting to see them.
After all the dust had settled, Mike Hoare needed money and established an 'Order of the Wild Geese' . I believe that for the sum of R10 ( when R10 was actually worth something ) you could join and were issued with a certificate, an explanation of the origins of the name , Wild Geese and a Wild Geese patch for your anorak ( or maybe your pajamas !). The chap who was issued with the illustrated certificate was member no. 494, so quite a few people subscribed to this bit of Irish b..s..

Mike

What an interesting topic!
Please find attached photo of the man himself with clear view of said badge.

I do not know if any copyright has been broken with this picture, however if I end up on a flight to the other country I will know I have broken the law...hmm Great Britain?

Cheers

Dave

Very nice, what's the significance of "Jumbo".

When I was working as a print journo I had Mike Hoare's London phone number in my contact book. Used to impress the hell out of editors when I could quote the grand-daddy of all mercs in a piece.

He is still alive and kicking in Africa!

Seriously doubt these types will ever fight again, Mann and his bunch were possibly the last of an era! Our ex SADF Recces and Parabats are all getting a bit "long in the tooth" to run around the African bush!

Eddie, not a clue, it was in the same auction lot. I was informed it meant lucky man but that doesn't mean much.

Personally out of all the 'Le Affreux' I'd rather have had Jerry Puren's number!

The circular Wild Geese badge and the certificate were produced and awarded / given to those people who donated money to fund the trial of the Seychelles coup offenders! Mike Hoare lived outside Pietermaritzburg for years and was directly involved in the saga.

There is photographic evidence of the para badge being worn by Belgian Col.Jean Schramme whilst acting as a commander with Hoare's units. The rank being in the style previously shown.

It is apparent that a lot of men retained their previous unit insignia.

Cheers
