Default DEAL Battalion Royal Naval Reserve

I have a first war medal to a Medic in the Royal Marines which has written on it DEAL - S then his number. I have been told that the DEAL was his Battalion in the Royal Naval Reserve, the S standing for short service.

Can anyone tell me or better still post me a picture of the cap badge / insignia he would have worn.

Thank you very much
Brett

I was always lead to believe it was the RMLI cap badge.

During WW1 the Royal Marines were several specialised units Medics, Engineers, Train and Labourers, they were part of the Royal Naval Division. There were volunteers from the RNR in the Royal Naval Division but they were members of other units not the Royal Marines.

Its no mistake, Royal Marine medals with the DEAL prefix are all impressed R.M.

On the back you say..........so that means you must have a 15 Star Trio so your man served Gallipoli.

yes a 15 star trio, that confuses me though, i thought men who served in Galipolli did not receive the 15 star? is this correct?

The Royal Naval Division - By Douglas Jerrold

....is the history, sadly little has been written regarding the Deal Marines.

A small donation and letter to the Fleet Air Arm Museum should secure full service papers on your man.

Brett,
JJ is correct here.
Royal Naval Division formed in 1914, from 'spare' Naval personal of the RNVR, RNR, RFR & RM reservists.
It was comprised of 3 Brigades of 4 battalions each.
The first 2 Brigades were named after famous Admirals...Hood, Drake, Nelson, etc, while the 4 Battalions of the third Brigade ,the RMLI Brigade, were named after RM Depots..... Plymouth, Chatham, Portsmouth & Deal.
Hope this is of help.
Cheers !
Steve

I used to collect to the RND. The strange thing is you can buy a mans medals for half the price of a cap badge. They are a tough sale, in the end I had to give up as I couldnt get my money back even on low value WW1 medal pairs for 45.
