Notwithstanding the photo of the Royal Marine it's implied that he was a soldier. But that aside - what are the medals? Mike

Mike,

I cannot see from the newspaper article where Australia comes into the story ( other than the mention of Canberra ) but the medals appear to be:

Australian Service Medal 1945-1975

and

Australian Defence Medal

Default Medals

If this person was in the Royal Marines and killed in Korea why has he got Australian medals, surely he is only entitled to British And UN Korea medals? Something odd here.

Here we go, he had 'moved' to Australia and transferred to the Australian Army:

His father had an interesting military career:

"David's father John had served in the Army during the Second Boer War and the Second World War."

"Missed" WWI but served in the Home Guard during WWII perhaps?

Best,

That's clear. I believe that 1 RAR was a component of 28 Commonwealth Brigade from June 1952 until 21 March 1953. 1 RAR's first operation was a raid on Hill 217 in order to capture a prisoner for intelligence purposes, but they became so heavily involved with the enemy that they failed to achieve the objective. They destroyed four bunkers and inflicted casualties before being forced to withdraw heavy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire , losing three killed and 28 wounded in the process ("The Australians in Nine Wars - Waikato to Long Tan") The Armistice was signed on 27 July 1953.
