My Paternal Grandfather served with the 1st Hertfodshire Regiment. He received both the Defence Medal and the Territorial Medal.

I think on liberation from the PoW camps in the FE, they were all interviewed and a record made for war crime purposes.. As far as I am aware these are avaialble at the National archives.
Sounds a nice group. As you are proberly aware the memorial chapel to those who died on the death railway is in the RC church at Wymondham. regards Steve |

Defence medal query
Well, I have known several FEPOWS mainly from the Cambridgeshire Regt and none had a Defence medal on their bars, some had just the 39-45 Star, Pacific Star and War medal if they had not been Territorials pre war.
I may be proved wrong but they were adamant that they were not entitled to the Defence medal, sadly most of these men are not with us anymore to ask. Rob |

I would recommend the "Medal Yearbook" published by Token Publishing. It is published every year and has all the information on the various medals. I have a large collection of this publication, going back several years..... I am very sorry if I have caused any confusion, I will not bother again. |

Medals
Andy,
I think I may have been the cause of confusion, the men who apparently got the Territorial medal and not the Defence were the FEPOWS as far as I can make out. Yes, other servicemen got both. Rob |

1st.Hertfords remained in the UK on coastal defence duties until March 1943 so they qualified for the defence medal.
