Default R.A.P.C.

Hello all, can anybody explain why the RAPC cap badges with gilding metal KC and lion and yellow brass motto scroll came about and what date they were issued? I have heard it was during WW2 but for what reason nobody seems to know. A shortage of nickel seems unlikely but I see no other reason for it. When I was into serious collecting some 30-odd years ago I had two in my collection, one mint and the other well used. Any help wouldbe much appreciated.

I believe that they were a WW2 makers' error. I have not seen any documentation about them at all.
