Default 25 April 2015: 100th Anniversary

LEST WE FORGET

25 April 2015 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

http://www.greatwar....-gallipoli.html

The casualty figures give a good understanding of who suffered:

Australia: 18.500 wounded and missing - 7,594 killed.

New Zealand : 5,150 wounded and missing - 2,431 killed.

British Empire (excl. Anzac) : 198,000 wounded and missing - 22,000 killed
.
France : 23,000 wounded and missing - 27,000 killed.

Ottoman Empire (Turkey) : 109,042 wounded and missing - 57,084 killed.

Furthermore 1.700 Indians died in Gallipoli, plus an unknown number of Germans, Newfoundlanders and Senegalese.

( These figures are educated guesses, but still approximate and controversial. They are taken from various sources, i.c. official Turkish, Dr Geoffrey Partington, Bernd Langensiepen, Robert Rhodes James, Spencer Tucker and Geoffrey Moorhouse. )

Hiya Blue Puttees,

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

The RBL (Royal British Legion) is holding a commemoration parade to mark the 100th years anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings.

This is being held in Whitehall, with a parade past the Cenotaph on Saturday 25th April 2015, (next W/E) @ 10.00hrs.

Myself and a number of other veterans from the RASC, RCT, RAOC & RLC will be in attendance to mark this event, along with many other Regimental Associations.

My wife Theresa's G.Grandfather joined the 2nd Hampshire Regt in 1906, went to India and ended up on the River Clyde at Suvla Bay. He went through the whole of world war 1. He then rejoined the Hampshire Regt at the outbreak of the 2nd WW and was made to stay behind when they were posted out to North Africa in 1940's.

True hero's all of them, never to be forgotten by us who are their descendants.

Ken (The Fatboy)

The one thing you don't here about in Australia is this:

British Empire (excl. Anzac) : 198,000 wounded and missing - 22,000 killed
France : 23,000 wounded and missing - 27,000 killed.

Especially the French contribution to the Gallipoli Campaign.
