All Brass
Hello
Did the Lincolnshire Regt badge in all brass have EGYPT in old English or in Roman lettering? I have seen two different types of this badge, I do not think they would have made two variants. Regards Terry |

Terry,
there was not an All Gm (Brass) Lincs 1916 "Economy" badge! Perhaps it is something else? http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...hp?albumid=400 Andy |

Forthcoming article will reveal all.
Regardless of GM badges, there were actually very many variants made during the 1st WW as there was such a demand which meant that dies wore out at a rapid pace. |

The list is complete rubbish I am afraid. It could be on their because someone in the 1960s (when the list was compiled) had a locally made cast brass badge or an officers badge etc. Gaylor's own work admits that it is only a list compiled by collectors at the time of all brass badges they had in their collections rather than any official source or documentation.
The change in font from Old English to Roman font came with the post 1946 Royal Lincolnshire badge. |

All brass Lincolnshire cap badge
I have an All brass Lincolnshire cap badge, which is sandcast and made as a replacement badge. This is what Gaylor possibly based his list on when given this information by fellow collectors back in the 1960's.
Public records were not accessible in those days and anyone writing a book on badges had a far more difficult job than today. Rob |

In the 1970`s I acquired a couple of all brass pre 1926 pattern Kings Liverpool other ranks cap badge.
It never occurred to me at the time that they are almost certainly 5th Kings badges which somehow has lost all their black finish or perhaps ( and possibly more plausible ) that they had never had the black finish applied in the first place. ( I also have examples of the WW1 period Liverpool Irish other ranks cap badges with no trace of the blackened finish left that they would originally have had.) If John Gaylors fellow collectors had similar examples you can perhaps understand why the Kings appears in the list of all brass badges. For a number of reasons I was not a fan of John Gaylor but his book certainly broke new ground and contained considerably more text and therefore information than had previously been the case with books on badges. P.B.

here is the list of what I'm pretty certain are those "Regular Infantry" badges that came about in 1916 to save "Time" (Economy)! Note there are only 26 and only 1 Scottish. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...hp?albumid=400 There are other all brass or gilding-metal badges that are perfectly legitamate but not the 1916 produced badges. Often TF badges that have been polished back to brass or nickle plated badges which have undergone the same fate! Also note that a authentic 1916 EI should be struck as a single piece, not two or more and with the exception of the RS have slider fittings. Andy Last edited by 2747andy; 20-04-15 at 12:36 PM. |
