Default Maori Contingent Egypt 1915

Hi

A recent acquisition of a WW1 official press photo showing some Maoris from the Maori Contingent 'having a joy ride across the desert before leaving for Malta' 1915. The NZ Commander, General Godley, recommended that the contingent go to Malta for further training and garrison duties, despite the impassioned plea by Te Rangi Hīroa (Peter Buck for them to be sent to Gallipoli. Due to heavy NZ casualties, the Maori Contingent was eventually sent to Gallipoli and landed at Anzac Cove on 3 July 1915.

Unfortunately, only a couple of the soldiers appear to be wearing cap badges, which are indiscernible.

Cheers

John
