It may be rifles/military related but to me it looks more like a livery item, possibly an item of horse furniture as you suggest.

I would say that its a bridle boss ..... for a British nobleman.... a Duke possibly. If its Regimental then possibly belonged to a Colonel......

Hello bc

If you have a look at this page - https://sites.google.com/site/livery...ome/lions-misc - you will find similar livery buttons - lions on hats (chapeau) - but with some detailed differences. It does, at least, suggest that your item is livery rather than military and quite possibly for a Duke's household as Griff said.

If the loop on the back is original I don't think its a bit boss, its more likely too the a stirrup leather fitting.

Default Another item

The link to livery lion crests was interesting. I have had the attached for years and wondered what it is. It is lead filled and has copper wire fastenings on the back, no doubt for some sort of harness. It a very attractive badge.
The 1903 11th Australian Light Horse badge has a similar, but different lion, the crest of a governor of Victoria I think (have forgotten). There are a pair of collar badges on Ebay at present.
I have two of these harness badges if anyone is interested.
