Hi David, Looking for the army badges struck by Birks. The airforce material is another area. They also struck the Memorial Bar, (aka the Birks bar), which moves the discussion into medals.

Default SSR

Bill, I used to have a Birk's marked SSR badge. I sold it in 2013. I think I still have photos?

Default Interesting Birks Notes

Found this site with early photo of a jewelery store in Toronto operated by "Birks - Ellis - Ryrie". An interesting combination for CEF badge collectors.

Bill,

Here is an exceptional quality Officers Canadian Artillery badge by Birks.

Made of bronzed copper with 2 pairs of tangs to the rear.

It is stamped BIRKS on the rear of the crown.

A lovely feature of this badge that I haven't encountered before on an Artillery badge is the addition of a maple leaf at either end on the CANADA banner.

regards

Hi Simon, That is a beautiful badge, and it is not recorded in any of the standard references. It may be a badge for the CFA, circa 1920-1927, or it may be a pre-1914 badge.
The army in Canada was organized into the permanent force and the militia (or reserve army depending on the date). In the post First World War period the permanent and reserve components of the artillery were awarded the "UBIQUE"distinction. This resulted in a new cap badge being authorized in 1927. (Going through the archive files it was clearly stated both the components were entitled to the new badges. I have previously indicated the CFA continued to wear the Canada badge, but this was not correct. Even though the militia component continued as the Canadian Field Artillery until granted the Royal Canadian Artillery distinction in 1936, they did adopt the new badges after 1927.)

The Birks firm was around from before the war through the inter-war years. It is not much use to determine the time period.

Hi Simon,

A really lovely badge, thank you for sharing it here. It just goes to show that previously unrecorded badges can still turn up. It just doesn't get much better than that! Well done indeed.

Cheers, Roy.
