Indian army 1980s mess dress buttons
Here are my 1980's Indian Army mess dress buttons.
The sizes are 22 and 17 mm. All but one are flat with a mounted designs. I have not researched their names. Help is appreciated and thank you for looking. |

The easy ones in the first post are the Indian Army Corps of Signals ['Jimmy' with the torch], The Regiment of Artillery, the tiger of the Dogra Regiment and what I think is a generic button for the Indian Armed Forces, so possibly worn by staff wallahs and so on. Blanking on the 'fortress' badge at the moment. Not, I think, the Khyber Rifles, who went to the Pakistani Army.
The eagle in the second post is the Brigade of Guards - perhaps the variants represent individual battalions or different periods/issues. The first one on the left is the Rajputana Rifles. The last one is 'Police' and probably one of the border security units but not sure which one. Last edited by peter monahan; 08-12-17 at 02:34 PM. |

To be pedantic, the proper titles seems to be: The Brigade of the Guards.
(Btw, it is in fact not a brigade in the British sense, but like the other infantry regiments).

The title is indeed the Brigade of the Guards, and it is a regiment. A better scan is attached. regards, |

And I would not have gotten the Corps of Engineers. As I've said elsewhere, my heart is with the infantry and cavalry, especially the old FF units, so I was still mulling over variations of 'Khyber Rifles' and such like. |

Which apparently numbers 56 battalions in 2017! Well spotted, sir. I must confess I'd never heard of them.

Increase your knowledge:
ITBP: Indo Tibetan Border Police. BSF: Border Security Force. SSB: Sashastra Seema Bal Al three police forces that guard different parts of the Indian border.

Here is a quiz of a dozen Indian buttons. Many are police, but there could be railway buttons as well. I have only been able to identify a two of them (BSF, RPF). I think I.R. may be an Indian Railways button, but I cannot find evidence.
Please help. |
