Default Victorian shoulder scales

Good morning

Can anyone positively identify these scales. They have officer quality buttons attached made by Jennens & co London. The buttons have a Victorian crown over LYC in script. Is it Leicester Yeomanry Cavalry? Do they look correct and if so what date are we looking at?

Many thanks

Martyn

Hello Martyn

I stand to be corrected but I think the initials are 'SYC'.

A quick look through Howard Ripley's book on Yeomanry Buttons does not show a button of this type (not for an 'LYC' or 'SYC').

A button with QVC over similar initials 'SYC' but without the scalloped edge is "claimed, though not confirmed" to be an undress coat button for the Surrey Yeomanry, 1831 to 1848.

Many thanks Roger

I did think that the L looks like an S but wasn't sure. There is a similar button on the internet under LYC and the Leicester Yeomanry Cavalry site but again I'm not too sure about the first letter. The backstamp on the button would date it to c: 1831 - 1860 I think.

Any more ideas?

Regards

Martyn

Its not Leicester.

I would go with Salopian with the brass shoulder scales for Dragoons.... but the VIII is throwing me a bit. ENDICI had a silver plate tunic button on eBay the other day that was exactly the same.

Its certainly Yeomanry Cavalry that begins with "S" .... if someone can identify why the Roman numerals VIII is under the SYC then that should positively ID the regiment.

Reference to "SYC VIII" written in an attributable 1830's shako to a member of the Surrey Yeomanry Cavalry's VIII Troop.

Well done Leigh.... that sounds about right because most Troops (Squadrons) were independent back in the day and would have their own uniform. So the Regiment formed up would not look exactly the same .... Derbyshire is a good example of this.
