Default RIFLE VOLUNTEER

Can any Forum member identify the unit? The belt plate "may" read 7th Rifle Volunteers around the bottom circumference. The top I cannot read. The photographers address is Shrewsbury.

Kind regards, Malcolm.

Hi Malcom,

I think it's the 2nd Shropshire Rifle Vols.

Check out this link to one of my badges.

If this photograph is likely to need a new home then I'm most interested?

Cheerio,

Roy

Hello Roy.

On a second look it certainly reads: Rifle Volunteer Corps. The top half I am not too sure about, but the badge looks identical to your photo. The image measures 140 x 95 mm so the detail is quite good.

Kind regards, Malcolm.

If you look at his headgear it is a late 1890's photo and therefore more likely to be a Middlesex RVC.

Thanks for that Simon,

I'm still going with Shropshire, aside from the circumstantial being it was taken in Shrewsbury. But on really straining to look at the letters, I can just make out 'H' in the correct place for SHROPSHIRE.

Cheerio,

Roy

I can make out 'SHIRE'.
