Default Women's Volunteer Reserve

An unlikely source - the National Trust magazine for Spring 2018 - provides information on the property at Mount Steward, Count Down, formerly the home of Edith, Lady Londonderry (aka Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart). While acting Colonel in Chief of the Women's Volunteer Reserve she formed a breakaway organisation - the Women's Legion - in 1915. By 1918 the Women's Legion was providing female cooks for the military, ambulance drivers, clerks and canteen workers. Portraits, medals and her Women's Legion uniform are on display at Mount Stewart.
