Hi Thomas.....funny in the sense it could have taken maybe a week or two of training to get the jumps necessary to get the para-qualified wings...after all it shows respect to the men under your command, makes I think, for a better "esprit-de-corps"..... Browning is wearing his army pilot's wing....
But,that's just me.....others may have different opinion on this....

Brigadier Hicks commanded the 1st Air Landing Brigade. Delivered by glider they were not required to be parachute trained.
General Urquhart was told he was too large a man to use a parachute and also admitted to Browning that he suffered from air sickness! At Arnhem He was delivered by glider with 1st Airborne Divisional HQ.

Senior officers were considered too valuable to lose, so unneccesary risks were avoided.
Browning didn't want his men to do anything he had not done himself, so he felt he had to learn how to jump. He made two jumps and hurt himself both times. Can't find info on Urquhart, but he took over command realitively late in the game and was already 43 years of age at the time?
Hicks was CO 1st Airlanding Brigade, who had nothing to do with parachutes.

Rgds, Thomas.

Agreed although landing by glider was pretty risky!
Incidentally the picture was taken outside the Wellington Barracks Guardroom not at Buckingham Palace although obviously they were on their way there!
