See you are NZ - that rate may be RNZN specific, all the Commonwealth navies rate & rank badges were similar, but some changed post war - ie: RCN had a major insignia change in 1949-1950,

L in centre of lightening bolts, Queen's crown above is: Chief Electrician,
As Jim said, not long in service, from 1948-1951, but it survived until 1969 as a lower rate of pay rate, presumably for a Ch El that had not updated his qualifications or had not taken the upgrading course(s). RCN B |

Royal Navy Skills Patch
Hi everyone
The Royal Navy Gunnery badges (including the one illustrated) all disappeared at the end of 1974 as, from 1st January 1975, the Gunner was replaced by the Missileman. That date saw the formation of the Operations Branch which contained the Seaman Sub-Branch and the Communications Sub-Branch. Each Sub-Branch was divided into different categories:- Seaman Sub-Branch Missile, Radar and Electronic Warfare, Sonar, Mine Warfare, Coxswain, Survey Recorder, Diver and Seaman Sub-Branch New Entrants. Communications Sub-Branch Tactical and General The Missile Sub-Branch initially retained Crossed Guns as its badge. These consisted of:- Crossed Guns - 2nd Class and Junior Operators Crossed Guns, star above - Man qualified professionally for Able Rate Crossed Guns, star above and star below - Man qualified professionally for Leading Rate Crossed Guns, QC above - Man qualified professionally for Petty Officer In 1983 these badges were replaced by badges with Crossed Missiles. These Crossed Missile badges were later replaced during another major reorganisation with badges which bore a Crossed Missile and Torpedo. However their design is nothing like the mystery Torpedo/Missile badge you have illustrated. The one you have reminds me more of the Crossed Torpedo and Missile emblem used on some Royal Australian Navy badges. I will try and find some illustrations and put them on the forum. Best Wishes Pete |

Royal Navy Skills Badge
This is the RAN badge I was thinking of. It is for a Combat Systems Operator. Although there are obvious differences between the badges the design of the missile over the torpedo is very similar. Perhaps the gold wire badge represents an earlier attempt at a design? The badge certainly has a 'Commonwealth' look to it rather than RN. Considering the part of the world in which it was found I would say it was possibly either RAN or RNZN. Unfortunately I don't have any info on RNZN trade badges so I can't make any direct comparisons.

RNZN - Weaponman star
Saumua the crossed missile and torpedo badge badge is RNZN for a Weaponman star (Between Weaponman Basic and 2nd Class). I don't have specific dates for it's introduction but I do have a copy of an official RNZN document detailing it which suggests it is before 1975.
Many of the other badges in use at the same time were identical to those in Royal Naval but there are some other New Zealand variations. Like others I would be interested to see the full frame but you may need to move it to the New Zealand section of the website. Hope this is of help. Last edited by Antrim82; 20-01-14 at 01:44 AM.
