Default 42 Inf Div - HQ Personnel

I may have shown the wearer before but not the actual flash worn by members of the Divisional HQ. The Sgt is an Int Corps member of 42 Inf Div's Field Security Section. It's the only image I have seen of the flash being worn (and painted on the tank of his motorcycle). Mike

Thanks. Looking again for the "dollop" I noticed a possible 42 Inf Div formation sign (red/white diamond) painted on the front mudguard. This bike would be a perfect model for a military vehicle enthusiast who was restoring one. Is there a Military Vehicle Trust member in the Forum? Mike

Might it be a serifed '1' on black square background as used by the Div Int Sec at that time - photo looks to be in France, or early 1940 at least.

Could be. I'll try and find the caption details, but I believe this was taken in UK in 1941. Mike

I am at the moment but will not be re-joining next year.

The marking on the front and rear mudguards could be a serial on a black? square, it appears to start with an "8" and finish "7"?? but I can't find a reference to "87" being used?

The IWM reference number of this image is H12561. It was taken on 7 Aug 41. Mike

From 1940 onwards (according to Terence Wise), 87 was the serial for the HQ of the intermediate Inf Bde (in this case 126 Inf Bde) in a Inf Div (white numerals on green). This doesn't really seem appropriate, but perhaps the FSS had borrowed it for the occasion. Mike
