Sorry Frank,
It was Aprey, don't know why I said Mappin and Webb probably on my mind for another reason. I had not noticed the photograph although the tin was on display in a shop with contents spread around and when taken to fairs it may well have been left as on a couple of occasions the pencil was left at the shop though was reunited when sold.
£300 was not paid by the seller nor the buyer
Paul

Were the tins not originally in a larger card board box in which larger items like the pipe could be put? Bullet tip I have is just marked silver- it was the lighter that was made by the jewellers Asprey. Regards, Paul.

Just wanted say that I'm really enjoying the information coming in and learning a great deal. I'll post some photos of the cigarettes in the yellow sleeve as they are quite interesting.

Thanks

Paul

Nice link Paul,
The box I had seen was smaller and had the addition of two prayer cards not mentioned on the site, I wonder if these were the ones sent to widows/families of soldiers KIA as I don't think they would of been sent the other contents such as a pipe or cigarettes etc.
I have seen the Lusitania linked with a lot theories to what it was carrying before sunk, this is the first time I have seen it linked to these tins

Here is a lid that was lost or discarded at the time, alleged to have been found in the UK near an old hospital along with these badges.

The Chocolate Tin I would say is a rarity of 2 to 3 out of 10 empty, 7 out of 10 if it is full, and 9 out of 10 if it still has the packing and the photo of Queen Victoria (I have only ever seen these with the Cadbury Tins see photo)......

The Grey's tin about 6 or 7 out of 10, empty.....

The Scottish tin 7 or 8 out of 10 empty, 9 full.......

The Devonshire Regiment tin 8 out of 9 empty and has never been seen by me anyway full......

Mike

Don't get me started on all the other commemorative tins.......

A little late but I finally found time to photograph the cigarettes and tobacco in the tin. I know these were not issued but am interested to see if anyone knows what era this tobacco / cigarettes are from?

Thanks

Thanks for sharing, I find this subject fascinating.

Cultam have had a few very nice examples in, and wrote a very informative piece on them.

I had always understood it was Asprey who made the lighter, but, were not able to make the quantities required with the time available, it is also my understanding that Asprey made the silver tips for the pencils and engraved each cartridge case.
If they did not, do you know who actually did?
Regards Frank

Default Bullet Pencil/Christmas Tin

Could someone please advise whether or not the bullet section of the pencil found in the Christmas Tin is always in silver and always marked as such.
Eric
