Being completely bigoted:

Duff badges in my opinion are only produced by con artists after a quick buck. There is a dilemma with 'living history groups' etc where the word REPRODUCTION should be indelibly marked on the reverse of any insignia or item that is not original. The problem being that those new to the hobby can subsequently be deceived - to me that is simply criminal!

I also retain 'copies/fakes' in a chamber of horrors as a personal reference archive. The 'more realistic' ones can be quite educational.

Also - they can serve as a reminder to be vigilant

I always think it best not to 'wittingly' mix good and bad items as such a mix casts doubt on all items. Who buys from a dealer displaying any known fake? - same applies if you knowingly display duff items in your collection - who will take your collection seriously if you have an unmarked dud in there?

Wow - that all sounds very uncompromising, may be a tad unreasonable.

I was always taught - 'If in doubt leave it out' - and buy only from those you trust.

Forum advice is valuable given the expertise here, I am sure most of us are still learning (however long we have collected) and collective knowledge is of great benefit. However, I notice many experts are wisely never totally prescriptive. We can all be surprised and proved wrong by a perfectly valid variant.

Cool Fakes

I don't stop me looking at dealers stock where there are fakes displayed. I recently bought an 86th Carnatic Infantry cap badge which was in a display case full of fakes, it's knowing what is good and what's fake that counts.

This forum should be a must for any badge collector.

I think Peter is the nearest to the mark !

I know several dozen " collectors " who buy their badges according to the price and not whether they are genuine or not, as long as they have a nice looking ( and some are nice ) badge to for instance, The Warwickshire Regiment, they are quite happy.

Who are we to ' knock ' them, it is their choice and their money so what they do is their business, those of us who only want a genuine badge, strive to purchase just that !

As always, just my opinion and it is not meant to incite !!

Dave.

Dave - you express a perfectly valid opinion - and one I am sure many share. That is the good thing about the forum, it encourages a bit of banter and allows us to get things off our chest. My view of reproductions is quite uncompromising, but it goes with the territory I specialise in which is full of reproductions.

Cool Selling that stuff . . !

Whilst it's up to collectors what they spend their money on and we should not criticise, there are one hell of a lot of people selling badges online that have come from "Dads collection" which we know nothing about . . !

Duds abound with badge collecting, but knowledgeable people do not buy, only the unwary of which there sadly are many.

This forum is a must . . !

You thought I was joking?
Well, OK, I'm repainting the gate & the badges are just tied on with copper wire - for the moment.

This sword was welded to the gate when I got it, an 1825 pattern police hanger,
The sharkskin covered wooden grip hadn't been painted & would rot away if left in the open, so I hacksawed the sword off & it lives indoors.

Trouble is, welding the things to such a gate which is decades old & comprised of tulwars & bayonets & the like which are umpteen decades old could mislead someone one day to think that the verdigris'd fake badges they're carefully filing off are genuine.

For those of the Donkey-Walloper persuasion there's always the horse furniture option:

It's a wonder the Fusiliers didn't send you to Rupert school with that sort of imagination Leigh! Would look good but.

My kids will be able to sell my Connaught Rangers trinket with the description - Obtained from a veteran who collected for over forty years.

Or they can put it in a metal cigarette box with some other dubious pieces and just say they got it from their dad who spent 26 years in the army.

They wouldn't have told any outright lies, but they wouldn't have told the whole truth either.

Are those keys genuine or reproduction?
