New Battle Honours for Canadian Regiments

The Queen's York Rangers will finally have two Battle Honours - both from 1812.

Clive, I read your posts on FB, but I couldn't put in a comment. From what you said, I gather that there will be more battle honours approved.
Queenston Heights?
Stoney Creek/Beaver Dams?
etc etc?
There will be several more for units in that area of Ontario, and many for units in Quebec. Would the R 22é R be in the same "generic" rationale as the RCR? That would be odd as they were not formed until the FWW.

During the month of July, units that perpetuate the W1812 units were advised of the award of further BH. In addition to the BH "NIAGARA" (previously awarded), the additional BH include "DETROIT" (announced last week), "QUEENSTON", "CHATEAUGUAY", "CRYSLERS FARM" and a theatre BH "DEFENCE OF CANADA 1812 -1815".

They had a 31 July deadline to acknowledge and accept the honours as a timeline had been provided by PMO of critical dates that would be appropriate for the announcement of the new BH.

Although involved in selling the concept I am not privy to DND's decision on which specific units were asked/offered. I would imagine that the R22eR may have been offered BH in as much as they recruit from throughout the former Province of Lower Canada and would 'perpetuate' units that otherwise have no modern CF unit.

Ultimately, it is up to the individual regiments to decide if they wish to receive these honours and the VanDoos may decline. Another challenge is that many Regiments are at the maximum 25 BH on their colours and may not wish to choose an existing BH (with a more direct regimental link) for a W1812 BH. Mind you, this is the challenge that will exist shortly with A'stan also.

Interesting. R 22é R perpetuates R de Chateauguay and R de St Hyacinthe, both regiments which may be direct decendents of the Chateauguay battle.
Is it likely that the rule about the number of BH on the colours may be changed?

Hello Clive

Although a unit is restricted on the number of Battle Honours that are emblazoned on the Colours they are not restricted on the number of Battle Honours rewarded. For example, if I counted correctly, the Hasty P's have 40 Battle Honours. They could still accept the 1812 Battle Honours and choose to not to emblazon it on their Colours.

Also, according to "The Regiments and Corps of The Canadian Army" The Queen's York Rangers have 30 Battle Honours all except one from WWI.
