French Liaison Officer
Flers, Normandy 17 Aug 44. A French LO to 11 Armd Div, two Resistance fighters and some justifiably worried Luftwaffe PW. The cocked Sten in the back of a moving Jeep is a bit of a health and safety issue. Can a French member tell anything about the LO's unit from his badges?

Is he wearing an 11th Armoured Division badge?
The beret pulled to the right rather than the left - would that be the norm for a French man at that time? |

Possibly a French para before becoming part of the SAS with black beret and British Parachute regiment badge with the crest sawed off. Wearing of berets depended on which unit he was part of, some wore them pulled to the right, some to the left.

Yes - 11 Armd Div sign. Is that a folding butt M1 Carbine beside his left leg? Mike

I agree - Polish. Look at the collar insignia. Eddie

If Polish, could the ribbon on the left breast be the single star version wound badge?
It appears to have an emblem of some kind in the middle. (I only have an image of a 3 star one with the communist regime's light blue rather than the Army in the West's Garter blue). Last edited by leigh kitchen; 29-06-17 at 12:29 PM. |
