GvR pattern cap badge, and what appears to be an MC ribbon.

ED is a bit of a question. Permanent force officers didn't qualify for the ED, and the RCHA was permanent force.

Bill, could it have been awarded prior to entering the Permanent Force?

I also checked his file and there is a distinct lack of informations regarding his medals. Jo

Hi Don, Yes, he could have been RCHA, retired to the militia and continued in the reserve artillery and when the war broke out, reupped.

The Military Cross ribbon confuses me. There is no notation (that I found, though I may have missed it) in the linked CEF service record that would indicate Mr. Gimblett was awarded the MC. He was awarded the DCM for actions during his service in South Africa and there are notations of "D.C.M." on a few pages in the identification headings so it may be assumed to be the same man. In the 31 December 1919 quarterly Army List which lists the war services of officers of the Army (including the Dominions) a search brought forth only two entries named for "Gimblett". Both with an initial of "W." and both noted to have the DCM, however no MC. I suspect that both entries (pages 1962 and 2014) refer to the same individual in that one entry mentions only service in SA and the other only 1914-19 war service. https://archive.org/stream/armylistj...earch/Gimblett Battery Sergeant Major Gimblett's service record for the Canadian Special Service Forces (i.e. South Africa) http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...IdNumber=9293& Last edited by Blackadder1916; 03-07-17 at 02:50 AM. Does the Lt (DO) in the Army List pertain to District Officer?

There is a strong possibility that the colours attributing the ribbon to a Military Cross are not true. There have been several threads regarding the type of film used during the war and the interpretation of the colours. The ribbon likely represents the DCM.

Hi
There is a W Gimblett on the Canadian QSA Roll as a BSM: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...opy=e002211090 RCGA and A Bty in Kingston prior to signing up as RSM in 4CMR. Transferred back in 1901. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...IdNumber=9293& According to LAC, BSM WH Gimblett received the MiD: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discove...Number=112843& Could find no mention of him in the ED roll or MC entitlement but don't have my full resources available at this time. regards Darrell
