Default An interesting Gallipoli memorial piece...

Hello All,

For your consideration is this smart little silver vesta, monogrammed dedication engraved on one side, personal details and casualty data engraved on the other. Engraving is done by two different hands, but both contemporary to the piece. I've never come across anything like it before, but I speculate it was either among personal effects returned to the family and engraved later or it was left behind by the officer and engraved as a momento mori upon notification of death. Opinions would be welcome!

I have seen similar treatment of items from the deceased, silver I'd tags and watches with death dates added, as you say hard to tell if left behind but from their returned effects os more likely Imo.

An interesting and poignant reminder of a fallen soldier.

CWGC records state buried in Plot Sp Mem A.122, Redoubt Cemetery, Helles. Other details as per the vesta case. Why was Egypt engraved on the case? Mike

Excellent question, Mike. It's a mystery.

Mark,

A lovely piece.
Very interesting to me.

All the Manchester Regiment TF Bn.'s served in Egypt prior to embarking for Gallipoli, must be a reference to that.

regards

Thanks, Simon! Agreed, it's a very attractive little tribute. Am currently on the hunt for a good Manchesters Officers badge to display with the vesta.
