RCAF Pilot wing
Just picked up at the weekend ... story was that they were presented to a graduate of a flight training school in Canada .. even though he was RAF.
Either never wore them or was issued with a British set... Look okay to me but would appreciate other opinions ... Cheers Gary |

I believe you are correct. These look like the standard issue presented to new graduates at a Canadian "Wings Parade" during WWII. The pin was used to quickly attach the wing to the undoubtedly very proud recipient's uniform by the issuing Officer. Nice to acquire one in this pristine, original condition, congratulations.

Standard Canadian made Canadian Air Force pilots wings. Highly unlikely they would be issued to an RAF airman, even if he was a Canadian volunteer in the RAF as provision was made in Canada for the production of RAF, RAAF and RNZAF insignia for those country's airmen training on the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (B.C.A.T.P.). Thus an RAF airman who completed his pilot training in Canada would have been issued RAF wings that were made in Canada, generally swapping them for English made varients once back in the UK.

Thanks chaps ... and the reasoning of your answers backs up what I originally thought ... probably swapped with another graduate whilst overseas on the BCATP.
I will try and post up the plastic wrapping they came in. The seller informed me that they came from a source of a casualty group of logbook and medals to a Wellington pilot KIA in N.Africa ... sadly long gone before I had the chance to add them to my collection. |
