R.A.F PILOTS WING
HI good evenin , I need to put a bid on an RAF lot , what do you think of this wing please ? not seen this type before it has a very `tall` letter A and the R leg cuts right across it ?
From my basic knowledge I would say the tunic is quite early war time maybe even 1930`s , very many thanks .

RAF Wings - Canadian made
Hi Chaps
If the wings are RAF Pilot but Canadian made, would that suggest they were worn by a pilot who trained in Canada (or perhaps USA)? Or, were RAF wings routinely made in Canada? David |

I sometimes think we over think this ? if a qualified pilot on finishing his training in the UK need a set of pilots wings he went an bought a set - a set he like a set that was in stock ? irespective of where they were made these were just ` badges ` not designed to be collected ? I welcome your thoughts

In RCAF dress regs there is mention of insignia for candidates training on the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, I am pretty sure being locally produced, hence there are Canadian pattern wings for RAAF, RAF and RNZAF etc.
In the UK as in North America insignia was produced for sale in tailors shops as well as official issue items. I've never come across foreign produced wings being shipped to the UK. The only exception being RAF pattern buttons and half wings sent from the UK to South Africa for the SAAF. These above would be for a pilot trainee on the BCATP or Arnold Scheme. |
