Hi Steve

Very nice indeed!

I don't understand why it's by Gaunt though. Jennens certainly, it has their mark, but didn't Gaunts absorb Jennens in 1924?

Home Service Full Dress was withdrawn in 1914 this included the RFC, you would certainly not expect to see gilt wings being worn in 1916.

It is, quite simply, a Jennens die. You are right in thinking that it looks like a Gaunt die because Gaunt took over Jennens' dies when they bought up the business in 1925. They continued to use the Jennens dies for their own productions but stamped them 'Gaunt late Jennens'.

Yes, that's certainly what I would go along with. I think Jennens became a limited company c. 1912 and continued very much as an independent concern throughout WW1 and until 1924/1925 when they were taken over by Gaunts. Then, as detailed above, Gaunts continued to use former Jennens dies for insignia production. So, what became a Gaunt die from the mid-1920's and might be thought of as one now was originally a Jennens die.

So, it's a Jennens-made badge as far as I'm concerned, with no Gaunt connection at the time it was manufactured. Not that any of that detracts from the badge in any way, to my mind Jennens always produced top quality badges and buttons.

David

Jennens also produced the fine Mess Dress wing, but, again it would have only seen very limited use in Great Britain before and into the start of the Great War.

So reading the comments any gaunt made badges from this die are copies made 6 years or more after the RFC was no more and became the RAF in 1918.

Default Makers Mark "GJDF"

Hi is this a good makers mark for one of these? Looks to have a bit of double striking?
Thanks in advance!
